Our First Days In Llanes

The group wasted no time getting to know Llanes, our first stop. When we arrived yesterday, we dropped off our bags and had a traditional meal at the hotel (octopus and potato stew and paella – quite the introduction to Spanish cuisine), then walked around town. It is simply beautiful!

Today was the group’s first full day in Spain, and we decided to enjoy the beautiful weather outdoors. After breakfast, we wandered around the winding streets of Llanes to exchange some money, buy a soccer ball, and get some snacks and coffee. Afterwards, we had our first Spanish lesson – on food – in a local park. Once the lesson was over, we used our new vocabulary words to split up into groups and buy things to eat for a picnic lunch. We then met up with the food that we bought and walked up the hill to Paseo San Pedro, which has amazing views of the town and the small bay on one side and the open Cantabrian Sea on the other.

After lunch, we headed down the stone steps, took a quick dip in the crystal clear waters of the beach, and broke in our new soccer ball on the sand.

No beach day is complete without a soccer game!

We then traveled in bus to the nearby town of Celorio, where we had a two-hour surf lesson. The water was surprisingly warm, and everyone seemed to have a great time learning how to surf.

After the surf lesson, some of us headed back to the hotel, while others decided to linger a while longer on the beach in Celorio. In the evening, we returned to Llanes and headed over to the town center and ate dinner at an open-air hamburger restaurant. Later, we ate ice cream for dessert, then headed back to the hotel and settled in for the night.

We’re having an amazing time so far and cannot wait for our next adventure!
